Acetone Bonding ASA Plastics

⚠️ Safety First

Before you open the bottle of acetone, you need to prep your workspace. Acetone emits harsh fumes and is highly flammable, and melted ASA can release toxic VOCs. You must wear proper safety gear:

  • Respirator: A mask rated for organic vapors.

  • Gloves: Nitrile or butyl rubber (acetone will eat through standard latex).

  • Eye Protection: Safety goggles to prevent any splashes from reaching your eyes.

  • Ventilation: Work outside or in a heavily ventilated room.

1.Prepare Your Parts:Dry fit before applying anything.

Clean the mating surfaces of your two ASA prints. Fit them together dry to ensure they align perfectly and you know exactly how they connect. Once the acetone is applied, the plastic will begin melting immediately, so you won't have time to second-guess the alignment.

2.Apply the Acetone:Use Q-tips for precision.

Dip a cotton Q-tip into your acetone. You want it saturated but not dripping everywhere. Carefully run the damp Q-tip along the contact surfaces of both parts. You should notice the surface of the ASA almost immediately becoming slightly tacky or gummy.

3.Press and Weld:Apply firm, even pressure.

Quickly press the two parts together. Apply firm, steady pressure for about 30 to 60 seconds. The acetone is actively melting the surface layer of the ASA on both parts, allowing the plastic polymers to mix and fuse together into a single solid piece.

4.Clean Up Excess:Work quickly.

If any melted ASA plastic or excess acetone squeezes out from the seam, you can quickly wipe it away with a clean Q-tip. Be gentle so you don't smear dissolved plastic over the visible exterior of your print.

5.Let it Cure:Do not disturb the bond.

While the parts might feel stuck together after a minute, the chemical weld needs time to fully cure as the acetone evaporates out of the plastic. Leave the joined object alone in a well-ventilated area for at least a few hours—preferably overnight—before putting any structural stress on it. İt will need to be clamped together in some way to apply pressure to the bond and hold it together while it cures.
